Academy Sheet Metal

Academy Sheetmetal & Laser Cutting is a highly technical sheet metal business enterprise. We employ 30 staff which includes 5 Office staff. Of the 25 staff over two shifts 11 are apprentices at various stages of their courses. We have over the last 6 months, signed off 3 apprentices who completed their fourth year and achieve their Trade Certificate. This enables Academy to be more progressive and innovative due to the training and assistance of young staff who are computer astute and savvy. We have 6 touch screens and a number of different types of software which assist us in keeping or customers satisfied with our end products.

In October we are installing robotics to enhance our Amada Fiber Optic 6 Kw Laser Profile Cutter. This machine is the only laser of its type in Australasia and was recently developed in Japan. The machine was installed in April this year. This Laser complemented our existing 4 Kw CO2 Laser which we have had for three and half years. We also have a number of brake presses and folders which enable us to bend these very accurately cut materials to within fractions of degrees. These machines are supplied with accurately drawn electronic DXF files developed using Solidworks Software driven by our two in house draftsmen.

These two services are enhanced by an assortment of welding types and stations to complete the custom made products we fabricate.

The future of our business and consequently this industry is innovation and technology which we at Academy, are investing in extensively. The other part of our future is the young people of today in the form of Apprenticeships and Traineeships. This is our long term plan and business strategy.

We will also be providing professional learning and ongoing support to teachers as they adjust to the changes in STEM curricula and teaching methods being brought in nationally.

Communities must be involved in helping their kids gain the education necessary to make the transition to a technology based and information driven economy. SLAM Education will therefore work through schools and their P&C’s in the delivery of their services.

Hunter River High School is a comprehensive, co-educational secondary school with an enrolment of approximately 800 students, 20% of whom identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.  Our school is located on Worimi land, close to the Hunter River at Heatherbrae, south of Raymond Terrace.  ‘Quality Relationships – Quality Learning’ is the motto that underpins our community’s belief that quality educational outcomes are achieved when all partners in the educational process work collaboratively in a supportive, harmonious environment.  Through high expectations and embedded Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) values of Harmony, Respect, Honesty and Success, the school provides a learning environment that aims to give each student the opportunity to reach their highest potential.

Hunter River High School offers an innovative curriculum that includes a full academic load plus significant programs, including a wide range of nationally accredited Vocational Education and Training (VET) opportunities.  Hunter River High School is a P-TECH (Pathways in Technology) Pilot school, a leader in STEM education initiatives and provides extensive programs enhancing Aboriginal education, Literacy and Numeracy outcomes.

TULIP (Technology for Urban Liveability Program) is the University for Technology Sydney’s premier smart city initiative. We collaborate with communities, councils and the tech industry to explore the frontiers of IoT technologies in the public realm through nuts and bolts on-the-ground projects. We are passionate about using tech to create significant social and environmental impacts that help build liveable, sustainable and equitable cities for everyone.

TULIP has teamed up with Lake Macquarie City Council to deploy a new LoRaWAN network in Charlestown and Speers Point and we are n the process of rolling out a range of ‘living labs’ that include environmental monitoring and people counting. We believe that smart cities must be grounded n smart citizens! The LoRaWAN network is open for everyone to use for free and we’re excited to be working with local makers and IoT pioneers to start exploring what this versatile new resource can do for the wider community.
