Academy Sheet Metal
Academy Sheetmetal & Laser Cutting is a highly technical sheet metal business enterprise. We employ 30 staff which includes 5 Office staff. Of the 25 staff over two shifts 11 are apprentices at various stages of their courses. We have over the last 6 months, signed off 3 apprentices who completed their fourth year and achieve their Trade Certificate. This enables Academy to be more progressive and innovative due to the training and assistance of young staff who are computer astute and savvy. We have 6 touch screens and a number of different types of software which assist us in keeping or customers satisfied with our end products.
In October we are installing robotics to enhance our Amada Fiber Optic 6 Kw Laser Profile Cutter. This machine is the only laser of its type in Australasia and was recently developed in Japan. The machine was installed in April this year. This Laser complemented our existing 4 Kw CO2 Laser which we have had for three and half years. We also have a number of brake presses and folders which enable us to bend these very accurately cut materials to within fractions of degrees. These machines are supplied with accurately drawn electronic DXF files developed using Solidworks Software driven by our two in house draftsmen.
These two services are enhanced by an assortment of welding types and stations to complete the custom made products we fabricate.
The future of our business and consequently this industry is innovation and technology which we at Academy, are investing in extensively. The other part of our future is the young people of today in the form of Apprenticeships and Traineeships. This is our long term plan and business strategy.

Central Coast Industry Connect
Central Coast Industry Connect Limited (CCIC) is a not for profit organisation that is a collaboration of the three major industry bodies in the region; the NSW Business Chamber, HunterNet and AIGroup. CCIC works with Manufacturing and related service industries. The focus of all ITABs is workforce development and the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector. The promotion of training, the implementation of training packages and encouragement of traineeships and apprenticeships are core responsibilities of every ITAB.
RDA Hunter’s ME Program links industry with schools to develop a workforce for the future. It aims to make curriculum more interesting and workplace-relevant leading to a pool of job-ready, qualified and motivated workers.
The Program raises students’ awareness of career opportunities in Defence and defence industry whilst increasing the number of students studying STEM subjects in partner schools in the Hunter region.
The ME Program equips students with the skills and knowledge that will prepare them for 21st century STEM careers.
SLAM Australia, trading as SLAM Education, is a Newcastle Start-up founded in April, 2017 to provide after school and vacation activities that will allow today’s kids to grow and thrive in this new and exciting world where collaboration, creativity, design thinking and use of technology will be fundamental to reaching their full potential.
Our target age range is nominally kids who are between 8-14 years old (Late Primary/Early Secondary or Stages 3 and 4 in the education system) but younger kids are welcome following discussion with their Parents/Guardians. There will be no more than 20 kids per Facilitator.
SLAM Programmes will be managed by qualified teachers skilled in project based learning techniques.
We will also be providing professional learning and ongoing support to teachers as they adjust to the changes in STEM curricula and teaching methods being brought in nationally.
Communities must be involved in helping their kids gain the education necessary to make the transition to a technology based and information driven economy. SLAM Education will therefore work through schools and their P&C’s in the delivery of their services.
Obelisk Systems is an Australian STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education company, focused on bringing our cutting-edge space and CubeSat technology into the classroom. Over the last three years, Obelisk has worked with Hunter Valley schools to develop the StarLAB platform, a combination of hardware, software and an interactive online learning experience designed for educating and skilling the next generation of Australians. In partnership with RDA Hunter and Newcastle City Council, Obelisk has brought the world-class StarLAB platform to the primary school sector, providing a comprehensive learning experience from primary to tertiary education.
The StarLAB platform is a project-based learning system designed by teachers and engineers to give students 21st-century skills and a fundamental understanding of all the pillars of STEM.
Obelisk provides teacher development to support them for incoming STEM curriculums with a NESA approved Professional Development workshop. As well as continual support from a local organisation that understands what Teachers need.

TULIP has teamed up with Lake Macquarie City Council to deploy a new LoRaWAN network in Charlestown and Speers Point and we are n the process of rolling out a range of ‘living labs’ that include environmental monitoring and people counting. We believe that smart cities must be grounded n smart citizens! The LoRaWAN network is open for everyone to use for free and we’re excited to be working with local makers and IoT pioneers to start exploring what this versatile new resource can do for the wider community.
